Ben works in the warehouse. Between the racks: “But there’s no shooting here…”
His colleagues do not know that he served in Srebrenica. The fewer people who know that, the better.
Still, he tells about his experiences. What he did. What he didn't do. And why he has to go back.
He still has to do something. It's not: 'finished'.
The impressive text was written by Kees van der Zwaard. He based it on stories from Dutchbatters.
“AF - Back to Srebrenica” is the right piece at the right time: this year we celebrate 80 years of freedom and it is 30 years ago that the 'safe' enclave in Bosnia fell. Moreover, the current time (Gaza, Ukraine) shows that the theme is particularly topical.
With this monologue, Nico Meurs (Drama School Amsterdam 1994) gives an honest account of the dilemmas and emotions that veterans of all times and all missions will recognize. And despite the heavier theme: “AF - Back to Srebrenica” is a fresh and hopeful performance with sufficient (black) humor, music and movement.
