Field Recordings Day 2 - Short Film Programme 2
This programme moves through exile, memory and the places people are forced to leave: a kindergarten in Berlin, a Yugoslav railway, a drowned dam in Iran, an abandoned tower in occupied Georgia. For more on the works and their makers, visit www.fieldrecordings.org.
Morgenkreis (Morning Circle) by Basma al-Sharif, 20 min 30s, 16mm transferred to digital, 2025, Arabic, Armenian and German with English SDH A father and son move through their morning rituals before kindergarten, in a film that traces the contours of exile and colonial morality. Ordinary gestures of care become quiet acts of resistance, showing how childhood itself is entangled with survival and belonging.
Newsreel 242 – Sunny Railways by Nika Autor (Newsreel Front), 30 min, 4K digital, 2023, Slovenian with English subtitles A film essay on the Šamac–Sarajevo railway, built by young leftist volunteers in 1947 and damaged in the wars of the 1990s. Autor brings this history into the present, where the same railway has become a route toward an uncertain future for people on the move.
Postscript by Parastoo Anoushahpour, Faraz Anoushahpour & Ryan Ferko, 30 min, HD video, Iran / Canada, 2024, Farsi with English subtitles French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse crashed at the Karaj Dam in Iran in 1970 while filming; the footage resurfaces here, alongside a short film the Iranian state made in homage to the Shah's vision of progress. Anchored by a phone call with an archivist, the film speculates on Lamorisse's death and the afterlife of his final images.
The Tower by Salomé Jashi, 4 min, HD video, Georgia, 2018, Georgian with English subtitles A tower in the village of Ksuisi was once where children skipped school, men gathered to drink, couples hid to kiss. After the 2008 war and Russian occupation, the villagers were forced to leave; the tower, still on the Georgian side, becomes a place to take inventory of what is lost.
